Eastern Cape schools record excellent IEB matric results

Kingswood College pupils achieve a 91% bachelor's degree pass rate

The 63 matrics in the class of 2023 at East London's Merrifield College achieved a 100% pass rate and a 99% bachelor's degree pass rate in the IEB exams.

An A aggregate was achieved by 25% of the pupils, with 68% achieving an average aggregate over 70%. There were 152 distinctions, an average of 2.4 distinctions per pupil.

Top achiever was Noah Ciganek who was placed on the IEB list of outstanding achievers (placed in the top 5% nationally for six subjects). He scored an overall average of 91% with nine distinctions.

Nathan Sparg was placed in the top 1% nationally for mathematics, scoring an overall average of 90%. Matthew Malan obtained 10 distinctions with an average of 89% and Akiera Govender scored a full house with seven distinctions.

“Congratulations to our matrics on an outstanding set of results. They have applied themselves consistently and diligently throughout the year to achieve the individual goals they set themselves. They deserve to be rewarded with the outstanding array of grades across the board. We are immensely proud of them all,” Merrifield executive head Dr Guy Hartley said.

Merrifield deputy head Bridget Fielding emphasised that the school was proud of all their matric students, many of whom had attained, or surpassed, the individual goals they had set for themselves.

Dr Hartley thanked the Merrifield staff for their dedication and professionalism in guiding the matrics to these excellent results.

“Our staff have also gone the extra mile in offering close individual attention, providing additional lessons when required and extending learner performance. I am very grateful to our staff for the quality, service and passion underlying their teaching delivery.”

Taryn Hurly, Cady Wales and Taylor Williamson celebrate finishing their matric with flying colours; Taryn Hurly received 5 A’s in her final exams and was in top 1% in the country for Business Studies, she plans to study a Bachelor of Data Science at Stellenbosch University this year. Cady Wales achieved 3 distinctions and will be taking a gap year in the UK, while Taylor Williams achieved 6 distinctions, narrowly missing her 7th Distinction by 1% for Science, made it into the Top 1% in the Country for Life Orientation. She will be studying Mechatronics at the University of Stellenbosch.

Makhanda independent schools also celebrated their exam results.

“We take great pride in celebrating the accomplishments of the class of 2023. We applaud the individuals who earned distinctions and commend those who, through unwavering perseverance, successfully reached their academic goals.

Head of academics Tracy Van Mollendorf said: “Our dedicated staff deserves recognition for their exceptional efforts in fostering an environment where the class of 2023 could thrive and realise their full individual potential. As they embark on the next phase of their life journey, we extend our heartfelt best wishes to the class of 2024, anticipating their continued success and achievements.”

St Andrew’s College matrics achieved a 99% pass rate, with 95% of the 87 boys achieving a bachelor’s degree pass.

Three St Andrew’s College boys achieved seven distinctions.

College head Tom Hamilton said: “We are delighted with the results achieved ... These results are a step up from previous years and indicate a positive trend in terms of top-end individual results, but also a strong trend of the whole group improving over their matric year.

“We also take great satisfaction in the number of boys who made stunning progress throughout their time here.

“The work ethic was truly impressive and these results are proof of the work done.”

Diocesan School for Girls pupils achieved a 100% pass rate, with 252 subject distinctions and 49% of the school's girls achieving an A aggregate.

DSG head Jannie de Villiers said: “We are delighted to announce the Diocesan School for Girls' outstanding 2023 matric results. The class of 2023 achieved a 100% pass rate, with 100% of our girls achieving an A, B or C aggregate. Other incredible stats are 252 subject distinctions (262 including further studies), 3.2 distinctions per candidate with 49% of girls achieving an A aggregate (of which 15% of the girls achieved an aggregate above 90%)

“We are immensely proud of our 2023 dux, Sesihle Mrara, who achieved an astonishing ten distinctions and was placed on the IEB outstanding achievement list for achieving within the top 5% nationally in six or more subjects.”— DDR
