Pan in line for gong at African awards event

East London actor Chumani Pan has been nominated for a best supporting role gong at this year’s African Movie Academy Awards.

Pan was nominated for his supporting role in Silver Rain.

The nominees for the AMAA awards were revealed at a glitzy dinner event  in Los Angeles.

Others nominated in the supporting role category include South African actor Israel Makoe, Paul Obazele, OC Ukeje and Samson Tadesse.

It was also announced that South Africa would host the awards for the first time since they were founded in 2004.

Over the past decade they had been held in Nigeria.

Pan said the nomination came as a surprise to him.

“One of the guys featuring  in the movie with me sent me a message congratulating me, and then later the director also called. This is humbling, I can’t even begin to explain how I feel about this nomination,” he said.

This is the first time that the Mooiplaas-born actor has received an acting nomination since making his debut in the industry in 2007.

“As actors we put a lot of work into our characters. I don’t act for awards but this is a bonus and it makes all the work worth it,” he said.

In the movie Pan plays the role of the best friend of the lead actor. The film follows the story of a poor girl who meets a boy from a wealthy part of town. Together they set out to change their worlds. They are both desperate to find love, but do so in all the wrong places.

The director of the film, Juliet Asante, has described it as a story of hope, pain and strength of the human spirit.

Pan said he hoped his nomination would inspire other  actors. “I tell stories and I always hope to change people’s lives. Getting a continental award nomination is a big thing, especially for a rural boy like myself,” said the 28-year-old actor.

Pan is one of the lead actors in e.tv’s Ashes to Ashes. The drama series includes  a number of former Generations stars.  “The show is doing well; everything has been great this year. God has been doing great things in my life,” said Pan.

South African crime thriller iNumber Number will be vying for top honours at the awards after receiving nominations in 12 categories. Other South African movies nominated include Cold Harbour for best first feature film, and The Dream of Shahrazad and Nelson Mandela: The Myth and Me, both for best documentary.

The awards ceremony will take place on September 26 in Johannesburg.
